So, aside from all the cosmic and sci-fi stuff, I've started working on clip models to bring into projects; specifically models which will perform well at NTSC resolutions, or under simulated tape duress, without causing scene composition issues. I also wanted to keep the potential vertex count low. This, before subsurfing and solidification are applied, amounted to roughly 3500; I imagine I could get it lower.
There are a few things I normally would have gone for, but don't seem necessary or helpful for the end goal—such as, say, windshield wipers, or opening doors. I intentionally removed them for the sake of what I've learned in animation, comic book making, and film production over the last year; that is, scene contrast isn't just literal contrast, it's also color temperature, brightness, and noisiness, so detail count can be the enemy.
There's likely more to do; I could easily add a property or shape key to control things like whether there's a whale tail or the shape of the headlights; but this will do well for now. My next animation project on the whiteboard is something called "Eldritch Automotive Ltd", which is going to need a whole parking lot of these puppies. It would be great if I could tweak an object property in an instanced collection, and do that with a geometry shader; I'd have the whole lot in a few minutes! But, it seems the feature isn't quite that advanced yet. Perhaps I'll make a request?
