I needed to come up with an emergent physical form for the ship's synthetic intelligence, after fifteen hundred years of travel. ARGOS had nothing but the stars, and Earth's collective literature and myth, to draw inspiration from; and ended up liking the giant it was named after. Canonically it's completely androgynous, and I have a thing about people distrusting holograms—having made a few projection holograms—and that isn't the kind of strange I'm going for.
